SPEAKER AND TOPIC |

Rev. Barry Stopfel
Retired Minister,
Friend of the Congregation, Frequent Speaker.
Sermon Topic:
Life Without Leviticus: Why all the Rules?
This
sermon topic is taken
from the
suggestions submitted by congregants. The book of Leviticus
takes
it name from the Israelite tribe called "Levites" - the tribe from
which the Temple Priests are chosen. A large share of the
book is
devoted to what are called "purity codes." These codes were
intended as rules to maintain ritual purity and protect members of the
Israelite cult from "defilement" by the outside world. It was
essential that the relationship between the cult and its god remained
pure. In contemporary terms the Levitical purity codes raise
the
question, "Is cleanliness next to godliness?"
The
Rev. Barry Stopfel began his seminary education after a twelve-year
career as a marketing communications executive in New York City, where
he worked in a variety of marketing and advertising positions,
including retail banking, financial services marketing and in an
executive position with the travel division of American Express.
Immediately prior to entering seminary he was Director of Marketing for
the Joffrey Ballet.
Rev Stopfel is the author of
numerous articles in local and national religious publications, as well
as the book Courage to Love,
co-authored with Will Leckie, published in 1997 by Doubleday. He
received his B.A. in Mass Communications from Boston University, his
M.A. in Education and Communications from Teachers College at Columbia
University, and his M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York
City.
Barry is an Episcopal Priest
and
accomplished speaker and workshop leader, focusing on religious
teachings with regard to human sexuality, gender and social justice. He
also holds Affiliated Fellowship with the Unitarian Universalist
Association. For a number of years, he served as a minister for the

Barry Stopfel
Retired Minister, Friend of the
Congregation, Frequent Speaker.
Sermon Topic:
Tina Turner, Mover and Shaker: How to Overcome
Adversity
Responding
to a sermon suggestion from a congregant I use Tina's own words to
shape my remarks.
"This is what I want in heaven... words to become notes and
conversations to be symphonies."
"Physical strength in a woman - that's what I am."
"I didn't have anybody, really, no foundation in life, so I had to make
my own way. Always, from the start. I had to go out in the world and
become strong, to discover my mission in life."
"You take your problems to a god, but what you really need is for the
god to take you to the inside of you."
