Frequently Asked Questions
What happens at Sunday service? The service typically includes music, readings, and a sermon or talk. Each Sunday, the speaker may be a visiting minister or speaker, a member, or someone from the community. A social time with refreshments follows the service. What should I wear? Dress at our Sunday Services is a matter of personal taste. "Respectful Casual" wear is typical. Is there a Sunday School program? Yes; we call it Children's Religious Education. Child care is available for younger children. If my child doesn't separate well, can she or he stay with me in the service? Children of all ages are welcome to remain in the service. . Who are the members of the Board of Trustees of the congregation?
President: Larry Landrum Why should I join the congregation? Because you want to support progressive religion, religion which affirms reason, tolerance, honesty and compassion. Because you will find the encouragement to pursue your own religious journey among like-minded people. Because you want to be a full voting participant in congregational decisions and be eligible to serve as an officer or in other capacities. Because you want to be part of the wider Unitarian Universalist community. What does it mean to be a member? Membership does not require a "conversion" or a rejection of what you value from previous religious affiliations. Neither does it require agreement with a creed. To become a member, you simply make a financial pledge, and sign our membership book, indicating that you are in sympathy with our principles and wish to be part of our spiritual family. See our membership chair, Dee Whitman, to discuss the details. Until you are ready to join, you will be considered a "friend of the congregation". Friends may participate in all activities, but they cannot vote at congregation meetings. What is a "Friend" of the congregation? A "Friend" is a person who attends our activities, but has not yet made the decision to join. Friends may participate in all activities, but they cannot vote at congregation meetings and they are not eligible for certain committee positions. Some people remain as friends for many years, while others sign the book after attending only a few times. Whether to remain a friend or become a member is a personal decision that is left up to each person. Are board meetings open to the membership? When are board meetings held? Board meetings are typically held once a month at the church; day and time are announced in the newsletter, the bulletin, and/or this website. Congregation members who are not board members are welcome to attend, but cannot vote. How can I learn more? Visit the rest of our web site and its links and ask questions of members and friends during the after-service social time. In conclusion
We are an open, supportive congregation, ready to welcome people regardless of ethnic background, sexual orientation, education, or income level. We try to accept each other with all our quirks and frailties, support each other with love and understanding, and inspire each other with new ideas.
